Dateline: 2nd May, 2007
Fran Hegyi, cultural programme adviser for the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games has issued a "stark message" that there will be very little money available for the Cultural Olympiad which is to run for four years leading up to the Olympic Games in 2012. Most of the money allocated will be spent on the mandatory ceremonies, she told a Voluntary Arts Network conference, the list of which is "growing every day". These include the opening and closing ceremonies, the medal ceremonies, the torch relay and, the latest addition, an evening of entertainment to welcome International Olympic Committee officials when they arrive in London. She expects that there will be some money available but said that one of her jobs will be to work with arts organisations wishing to take part to target funders "with a coherent programme rather than going off in several different directions." Among the evenst which will be chasing a share of the money are an Olympic Carnival, a World Culture Festival, an International Music Programme, an International Shakespeare Festival, and a nationwide UK Cultural Festival. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
