Every year, The Journal, the NE’s regional morning newspaper, recognises the cultural life of the region with its Culture Awards. The theatre-related winners for 2014, announced at a ceremony at Sunderland Minster on 30 June, are:

  • Performance of the Year (sponsored by Barbour)
    Mamela (Curious Monkey at Live Theatre)
  • Writer of the Year
    David Almond for the Great North Run Million ceremony script.
  • Newcomer of the Year
    Heather Carroll (actress, Death at Dawn by Cloud Nine Theatre Company)
  • Best Arts and Business Partnership
    Port of Tyne and various partners.
  • Best Event Tyneside (supported by Newcastle University)
    Great North Passion (The Cultural Spring)
  • Best Event Teesside (supported by Teesside University)
    Jabberwocky Market (Darlington)
  • Best Overall Event of the Year
