Dateline: 4th June, 2003 Liverpool Will Be 2008 Culture Capital Liverpool is to be the 2008 European Capital of Culture, Tess Jowell, Secretary of State at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, announced today. Five other cities had entered the bidding process: Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Oxford and a joint bid from Newcastle and Gateshead, which was the bookies' favourite. "Liverpool was the most vital, energetic bid," Tessa Jowell said, and Sir Jeremy Isaacs, who chaired the committee which made the decision, added, "Taken overall, Liverpool looked good, sounded good, feels good to be in and would deliver a really terrific year.If one had to say one thing that swung it for Liverpool, it would have to be there was a greater sense there that the whole city is involved in the bid and behind the bid." Art, architecture, ballet, comedy, cinema, food, fashion, literature, music, opera, science and theatre are all to be part of a year long festival in the city. Achieving Capital of Culture status gives a tremendous boost to a city's tourism and economy. When Glasgow won the title in 1990 it also experienced a significant increase in inward investment.
