Darlington Civic Theatre

Darlington Reprieved

Darlington's Civic Theatre and Arts Centre will not close this year (see our news story of October 2010). New proposals from the council, to be debated on 18th January, would keep the Civic open for a further year to allow it to be put on the market for sale or lease as a going concern and the Arts Centre will continue to be subsidised while alternative methods to run it are explored.

Under the new proposals, the Civic will remain open until January 2012.

The council has reduced the amount it will save by £2m (to £20m) but warns that a fundamental review of its spending in two years time may change that.
