Northampton Royal and Derngate’s production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman is to continue despite the death of Tim Pigott-Smith.

Nicholas Woodeson will take the part of Willy Loman, replacing Pigott-Smith. All scheduled performances in Northampton have been cancelled, although the play will spend a week at Northampton Royal at the end of its tour.

Artistic director James Dacre and chief executive Martin Sutherland said in a statement, “after close consultation with the acting company, creative team and our touring partners we’ve decided to proceed with our production and tour of Death of a Salesman.

“We’re grateful to all our colleagues and partners for their ongoing support and to our audiences for their patience and understanding as the team here has worked hard, under such difficult circumstances, to achieve this outcome.

“Given the situation the organisation now faces, with enormous regret we’re also announcing the postponement of Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare's An Iliad.” The production was due to run from Friday 16 June to Saturday 8 July.

Death of a Salesman, directed by Abigail Graham, will tour to Cambridge Arts Theatre, Bath, Malvern, Exeter, Edinburgh, Truro, Guildford and Oxford. It will take to the Northampton Royal stage from 13 until 17 June.
