Shop for Theatre at Debenhams From 22nd to 27th August, the British Council will be welcoming 200 international promoters to the city of Edinburgh and taking them shopping for new UK drama in Debenhams, where multi-award winning Scottish company Grid Iron is presenting the UK premiere of The Devils Larder, a unique promenade performance taking place across four floors of the Princes Street department store. The Grid Iron show is one of 29 inventive theatre pieces, selected by a team of experts at the British Council, to take part in the fifth biennial Edinburgh Showcase. The programme includes a range of performances in unusual locations and challenging sites. In addition to the trip to Debenhams, delegates will have an opportunity to join a post-modern guided tour through the underground passages of McEwen Hall, one of Edinburghs most splendid Victorian gothic buildings; visit a private home to enjoy a darkly humorous exploration of the connections between smell and memory; and take a ride around the city to witness new theatre from the back seat of a speeding car. These are just a selection of innovative productions selected by the British Council from a range of the UKs most promising established and emerging theatre companies. Companies included in the Edinburgh Showcase can expect to find new audiences from all over the world as a result of participating in the event, which brings an income of over £1m into the UK theatre industry. Judith Doherty, Manager of Grid Iron said, "Since our first involvement with the British Council Showcase in 2001, Grid Iron has undertaken a number of exciting overseas projects and our links with international theatre programmers and practitioners has increased dramatically. The financial and creative impact on the company has been substantial but it is the sense of being part of a global creative community that is the most rewarding and exciting aspect of being part of the Showcase." The Edinburgh Showcase provides a successful platform for performing artists and companies to find new audiences all over the world. Over sixty per cent of British Council drama projects that took place globally over the last two years came about as a direct result of Edinburgh Showcase 2003. This included established companies, such as the Traverse Theatre whose five-country Balkan tour of The People Next Door was the most extensive theatre tour ever supported by the British Council in that region and new discoveries such as experimental live art duo Lone Twin, which went on to do extensive international touring throughout Western Europe and North America.
