Dennis Quilley Dies

Actor Dennis Quilley has died at home of cancer at the age of 75.

His last performance was in the National Theatre's production of Anything Goes, which transfers to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane tomorrow. He had intended to remain with the cast but his health was deteriorating and doctors advised him to withdraw. He had hoped to rejoin the show later in the run.

Born in Islington, he first became involved in theatre at the age of 17 when he got a job as an undestudy and ASM at Birmingham Rep. His first major production was Fry's The Lady's Not for Burning where he understudied and eventually took over from Richard Burton.

He had a long association with the National, being part of the company which Olivier led at the Old Vic, and he appeared in the NT's first season on the South bank, playing in Hamlet, which starred Albert Finney. He also appeared in the 25th anniversary production in 2001, when Simon Russell Beale played Hamlet.

He won two Society of West End Theatre (SWET) Awards, for comedy performance of the year in Privates on Parade and for best performance in a musical for Sweeney Todd.

His first TV appearance was in 1955 in a televised version of The Merchant of Venice in which he played Bassanio and his first film was Life at the Top in 1965. He was awarded the O.B.E. in 2001.
