Derby Playhouse

Another Six Months for Derby

The Derby Playhouse board have been given another six months to secure the theatre's future after creditors decided to wait for their money.

At a creditors' meeting the board announced it had found a company willing to buy the lease of the Playhouse building and continue to use it as a theatre.

Board chairman Professor Jonathan Powers said he was unable to reveal the company's name - but the announcement meant 85% of the creditors gave the board their backing.

Professor Powers said the unnamed company would buy the theatre's lease and £500,000 would go to the creditors.

The board hopes the deal will be completed before Christmas and productions may start again next autumn.

The theatre has been in administration for more than a year after Arts Council England and Derby City Council both withdrew their grants.

The theatre has been dark for most of this year, apart from when administrators allowed it to reopen to stage The Killing of Sister George.

The creditors' decision to back the board meant the end of an alternative proposal from the city council to pay £325,000 for the theatre's fixtures and fittings and take over the running of the building.

A council spokesman said the authority had "grave concerns" that Derby Playhouse Ltd's plans would fail again, which would jeopardise the future of the building as a theatre.
