Derby Theatre May Reopen Within Weeks Derby Playhouse will reopen in September if creditors accept a new £300,000 rescue package put forward by the company's board. The theatre went into administration last December and closed in February. Its future was thrown into further jeopardy when the Arts Council withdrew the Playhouse's funding, giving a grant for live, locally-produced theatre to Derby Live, a city council initiative. Now administrators Tenon Recovery have called a creditors' meeting for July 30th and are recommending that the rescue package be accepted. Investors whose identities have not been revealed have put up the cash. Playhouse chairman Professor Jonathan Powers said, "It has been a long and hard journey to get to this point. We are here only thanks to the fantastic support we have had from a lot of people, including our administrators. "If the creditors vote to accept, then you will see the fastest resurrection of a theatre there has ever been." Producing artistic director Stephen Edwards added, "Support for our rescue plan has been incredible. "Teams of people have been working around the clock and away from the limelight in order to pull off a miracle. "Staff and volunteers are standing by to re-join the company and prepare the building for shows. Creative teams are designing, casting and developing those shows." The business plan includes four shows over six months from September to February. Steve Orme
