Derby Playhouse

New Derby Crisis

The new board at Derby Playhouse have been rocked by another financial crisis - the Arts Council has asked for a refund of the £1.4m it gave the theatre as part of a recovery package.

The board was frantically trying to raise more than £1.1m to pay off 250 creditors, which would have meant the company could have been refloated.

But now the Arts Council has submitted a bid to administrators Tenon Recovery for repayment of a grant given to the Playhouse about eighteen months ago.

The administrators must now decide before a creditors' meeting on February 25th if the Arts Council's claim is valid.

Earlier this month the Arts Council decided not to fund Derby Playhouse Ltd for the next three years. However, it confirmed its commitment to produced theatre in Derby and awarded the city council £2.3m to be spent over the next three years.

The city council will hold a press conference on Friday to outline how it intends to "secure the future of live producing theatre in the city".
