Derby Staff to Get 90 Days' Wages Staff employed by Derby Playhouse Ltd, currently in administration, are entitled to 90 days' wages, an industrial tribunal in Nottingham has ruled. BECTU took the theatre to the tribunal, claiming that staff should have been consulted about the closure but were not. The tribunal agreed, saying that the Board of Trustees knew about the situation "weeks, or even months" beforehand. In fact, the staff were told that the Playhouse was closing and they had to leave immediately. The tribunal's chair said, "There was simply no more money to pay these staff. They would have been dismissed in any event. The real mischief in this case was the employer probably knew of this situation some weeks, if not months, beforehand and did not consult, as required by law." The Playhouse was not represented at the hearing. The union took the action on behalf of eight staff but a total of 75 are affected by the ruling, which means the payout could reach a six figure sum. However, as the Playhouse is in administration, they will only be able to claim cash through the Government-funded Redundancy Payments Office. Dilip Dattani, of administrators Tenon Recovery, said the tribunal decision would not have any impact on the busienss plan which it is developing to bring the theatre out of administration. "The business plan will be public knowledge in the next couple of weeks," he said. "Creditors will then vote on whether or not to accept it. This ruling does not change a thing."
