Alice de Sousa

Greenwich Director is Woman of the Year Nominee

Alice de Sousa, artistic director and producer of the Galleon Theatre Company at the Greenwich Playhouse, has been nominated as Woman of the Year - 2004 by the American Biographical Institute. Earlier this year, she was included in the Institute’s reference volume Great Women of the 21st Century.

The timing of this nomination couldn't be better, for she is currently working on Galleon's production of Ibsen's A Doll's House, a classic play about female emancipation.

Set at Christmas, against an apparently idyllic backdrop of marital bliss and domestic cheer, A Doll's House shows that marriage is not sacrosanct, and that the prime duty which an individual has is to discover who they are and then to become that person. Although when originally staged in 1879 Ibsen's play caused controversy, by the end of the century there was scarcely a country where it had not been performed. It was first produced in London in 1889.

Alice de Sousa has created in excess of sixty theatre productions, played leading roles in some thirty plays and written numerous acclaimed stage scripts. This year, she co-founded Galleon Films Ltd. and is presently developing two film scripts which will enter production in 2006/7. Since 2000 when she founded the Galleon Theatre company, she has produced Hamlet; Company (and its transfer to the Palace Theatre); Pygmalion; Richard III; You're Gonna Love Tomorrow; Peep Show; Hedda Gabler, in which she played the title role; The Crime of Father Amaro; Cousin Basílio, which she adapted for the stage; Shadows on the Sun; The Importance of Being Earnest; 3 Sisters; The White Devil; 'Tis Pity She's a Whore; The Ruffian on the Stair; The Erpingham Camp; The Maias, which she adapted for the stage and played Maria Eduarda; wrote and produced Inês de Castro; played Goneril and produced King Lear; and produced Absent Friends.

A Doll's House plays at the Greenwich Playhouse from 7th December to 9th January. 2005 (no performances on the 24th, 25th, 26th, 31st Dec., 1st & 2nd Jan.) on Tuesdays to Saturdays at 7.45pm (Sundays at 4pm). Tickets - £10 (£8 concessions) - can be otained from the box office on 020 8858 9256.
