Actor Dinsdale Landen died this morning at the age of 71.

He played Sir Toby Belch in Peter Hall's production of Twelfth Night and was nominated for an Olivier for his performance in Michael Frayn's Alphabetical Order in the West End. His last performance was in David Hare's Racing Demon in Chichester and Toronto (1998).

His TV career began in 1959 when he played Pip in Great Expectations, and he went on to appear in a vast range of roles, from Dr Who, The Avengers and Lovejoy, through What the Butler Saw to the classic Play for Today. His final TV appearance was in Catherine Cookson's The Wingless Bird (1997).

He was diagnosed as having cancer of the mouth at the end of the nineties and gave up acting. He is survived by his wife, the actress Jennifer Daniel.
