Direct Action at the Young Vic
From 27th May to 12th June, the Young Vic will be running a series
of productions under the title Direct Action: four little known
plays by four great writers who shaped the modern stage in two double-bills:
27th May - 3rd June
Winners by Brian Friel
"I think sometimes that happiness, real happiness, was never
discovered until we discovered it."
Dawn Walton, artistic director of Mamamissi Productions who has directed
for the Royal Court, Southwark Playhouse and Oval House, directs Friel's
poignant short play
Interior by Maurice Maeterlinck
A young girl has drowned. Her body is carried home. The village is
in mourning. So why does her family seem unmoved?
Directed by Christopher Heimann, artistic director of the imaginarybody
theatre company whose hit show 100 is currently touring internationally.
5th - 12th June
The Exception and the Rule by Bertolt Brecht
A wealthy businessman races to discover oil. As he approaches his
goal, he starts to doubt his porters. Are they cutthroats and thieves?
Or are they the exception that proves the rule?
Jan-willem van den Bosch directed Mother Courage for Graeae
and Destination for Volcano.He has directed in Bosnia and Slovakia.
The New Tenant by Eugène Ionesco
A man moves to a new flat. The removal men are astonished by the vast
quantity of furniture to deliver. Ridiculous and horrific, this short
play makes defining personal space into an art form.
Alex Murdoch is the artistic director of Cartoon de Salvo for whom
she last directed Meat & Two Veg.
