Dateline: 17th September, 2003 Dirty Dusting Transfers to Packed Houses The comedy which is fast becoming a North East cult, Dirty Dusting, has transfered, after a second run at South Shields' Customs House to the Theatre Royal, Newcastle, where it was greeted with gales of laughter and rapturous applause by a packed house on its opening night. The play, written by Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood, deals with three office cleaners, all over 70, who, on being told they are to be made redundant at the end of the weekend, decide to set up a sex chat line on their employer's premises. Performed by three of the region's veteran actresses - Gwen Doran, Helen Russell and Jean Southern - and ex-RSC actor David Whittaker, the play transferred to the 1,250 seater Theatre Royal at the invitation of its General Manager, Peter Sarah, in what many considered to be a risky move, given that it was written for and first performed in a theatre just a third of the size. The first night audience, however, clearly showed that Sarah's instincts were right and he expressed himself delighted with the reaction. Customs House director Ray Spencer was equally delighted. Co-author Ed Waugh said that interest in the show is coming from many quarters and that the end of the Theatre Royal run will not be the end of the play. Dirty Dusting runs until Thursday - and very few seats are left.
