Dirty Protest in London Cardiff's cult "guerrilla theatre" company is to take its first ever Dirty Protest to London. Dirty Protest launched in Cardiff in 2007 and has quickly established itself as what National Theatre Wales' Artistic Director, John McGrath, has called, ""one of the most dynamic initiatives in theatre at the moment - a mad, messy collective of writers and theatre artists with something worthwhile to say." Leading writers, actors and directors, including Gary Owen, Ed Thomas, Torchwood's Helen Raynor and Skins' Lucy Kirkwood, have flocked to work with the not-for-profit company to bring vibrant, relevant new writing for theatre to a new audience in Wales. Dirty Protest sets out to reach the "My Space Generation" via the bars and clubs of Cardiff, as well as performing at the Sherman Cymru and Latitude Festival. Now for the first time, Dirty Protest leaves its spiritual home in the yurt at the back of the Milgi bar on Cardiff's City Road and is hitting London. Award-winning playwrights Chloe Moss will host the event at the Camden Roundhouse, Tuesday December 1st. Winner of the 2009 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for This Wide Night which has a revival at the Soho Theatre, Moss has invited some of the most talk about young female writers to join her, including Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Lucy Kirkwood and Colette Kane. Dirty Protest's guest curators are traditionally invited to pick a theme for the night, to which their writers must conform. This time Moss has given each of the writers a four-week deadline to write a ten minute play with the theme, Out With the Old. Dirty Protest co-founder Tim Price says, "Chloe has selected some of the most exciting young playwrights around and we really privileged that they were happy to take up the Dirty Protest challenge. We're really looking forward to performing in the Roundhouse and showing London what we are all about." In keeping with the theatre company's tradition they will also be showcasing new writers on the same stage as established playwrights. Joel Horwood, who recently co-wrote suddenlossofdignity for the Bush Theatre, will be selecting four young writers from the his writing course at the Roundhouse. All of his students will be given the same theme and time scale to complete the play and see their work given equal prominence on the Roundhouse stage. And all for the price of a pint! Chloe Moss' Dirty Protest is on Tuesday 1st December at 8pm at the Roundhouse, Camden. Tockets are £5. More details from www.dirtyprotesttheatre.co.uk Allison Vale
