Dominique Jackson: the mayfly in Only a Day

Dominique Jackson who appears in the Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks and children’s TV favourites The New Worst Witch and My Parents Are Aliens is to take a role in a new play at Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre.

She will be the mayfly in Only a Day, penned by German children’s author and illustrator Martin Baltscheit and translated by David Henry Wilson.

Dominique Jackson is perhaps best known for playing teenager Lauren Valentine in Hollyoaks and Becky in the children’s TV series Becky and Barnaby Bear.

In the theatre she played Molly in Annie at the Victoria Palace and Dorothy in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for Hull Truck Theatre.

Joining her in Only a Day are actor-musician Lowri Amies (mayfly 2), Andrew Ashford (boar) and Jacob James Beswick (fox).

The play will be directed by the Belgrade’s creative associate Tony Graham. He said, “while the show is ideally suited to those aged seven to 11, this is a play for everyone. It asks important questions about truth, friendship and how we choose to live our lives.

“The Belgrade holds a special place in the hearts of those of us who make professional theatre for young audiences. That this production will make its UK première in the same year as the 50th anniversary of theatre-in-education at the Belgrade makes the event all the more special.

“After the show there’ll be an opportunity for children and their families to talk to the characters, ask questions and reflect upon what they’ve witnessed—something which I’ve always valued to be an important part of the learning process.”

Only a Day features original composition by Martin Ward, set and costume design by Jason Southgate and lighting design by Adam Crosthwaite. Movement director is Lawrence Evans.

Only a Day will be staged in the Belgrade’s B2 auditorium from Saturday until Saturday 21 February.
