"Don't Cut Culture," Davey Tells Councils Alan Davey, Arts Council England's chief executive, has told a conference of the Local Government Association and the Chief Cultural and Leisure Officers Association that ACE will be unable to make up for any local authority cuts in cultural and arts spending. "The arts council," he said, "is simply not in a position to replace any lost local authority funding." He was speaking against the background of a recent suggestion from the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy that ring-fencing certain budgets, such a health and social services, could lead to cuts of up to 20% in other areas, including the arts, in the coming years, as the country has to reduce spending to reduce the UK's massive deficit brought about by the recession.
