A scsne from Playboy of the Western World

Druid to Tour Playboy

Irish company Druid is to return to the UK in May with a major tour of Synge’s best-known work and one of their most widely-acclaimed productions, The Playboy of the Western World, which will commemorate the 100th anniversary of J.M. Synge’s death. This tour follows last Autumn’s production of Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan, which heralded the beginning of an ongoing partnership with Oxford Playhouse which will see Druid playing UK venues outside London over the next three years.

The savagely funny Playboy of the Western World was the first play staged by Druid in 1975 and since then their production has played to audiences all around the world: New York, Edinburgh, Perth, Tokyo, Los Angeles and Washington.

Playboy tells the story of Christy Mahon, who stumbles into a public house in County Mayo claiming he has killed his father and so capturing the imagination of the locals and the romantic attention of the daughter of the house, Pegeen Mike.

Aaron Monaghan reprises the role of Christy and the cast also includes Derbhle Crotty, Andrew Bennett, Clare Dunne, Andy Kellegher, Aidan Kelly, Marcus Lamb, Christiane O’Mahony, John Olohan, Gemma Reeves and Seona Tully.
