Loughlin Deegan

Dublin Theatre Festival: New Director

Today the Chairman of the Dublin Theatre Festival Peter Crowley announced that the new Director of the Festival will be Loughlin Deegan.

Peter Crowley said, "We are delighted to welcome Loughlin Deegan to the position of Director of the Dublin Theatre Festival following awide ranging national and international search to find the ideal person to take on this important position as we head into the 50th celebrations. We are very pleased that Loughlin, with his wealth of experience in theatre, has accepted the position and I look forward to assisting him in making what I believe will be a significant impact on the 50th festival and for many years beyond. At this time I would like to pay tribute to the great work Don Shipley has done during his time with the Festival and wish him all the best for the future in his new role in Canada."

Loughlin Deegan will officially take up the post of Artistic Director and Chief Executive of the Dublin Theatre Festival in January 2007 but in the interim will immediately begin assisting the Festival Board in preparations for the 50th Festival.

Deegan has been Executive Producer of Rough Magic Theatre Company since August 2003. During this time he oversaw a remarkable period of growth for the company, both artistically and financially. He was previously Literary Manager with Rough Magic when his responsibilities included developing the work of commissioned writers and co-ordinating the SEEDS project, a structured new-writing initiative for emerging Irish playwrights which has recently been expanded to include young directors, designers and producers.

In the past he has worked with a number of theatre companies including Druid Theatre Company, Yew Theatre Company and the Belltable Arts Centre. His first play, The Stomping Ground, was produced by Red Kettle Theatre Company in 1997, opening at Waterford’s Garter Lane Arts Centre and touring throughout Ireland. His second play The Queen and Peacock was commissioned and produced by Red Kettle, opening at Garter Lane Arts Centre in 2000 before being re-staged to tour in 2001. Other work includes a one-act play, One Man Down, for Macra na Feirme and a short film, A Ferret Called Mickey, produced by Saffron Films.

"As sorry as I am to be leaving Rough Magic at such an exciting time in the company’s development, the role of Artistic Director of the Dublin Theatre Festival is a responsibility that I have long cherished. I look forward to working with the festival Board, as well as the Irish theatre community and my international contacts to ensure that the 50th anniversary programme is a genuinely unforgettable celebration of Irish and international theatre that will also point the way forward as the festival continues to grow in strength and stature over the coming years,"Loughlin Deegan said today. "In departing Rough Magic I would wish to pay particular tribute to Lynne Parker with whom I have worked closely as a colleague and a friend for the last nine years. My respect for and gratitude to her are immense."
