Autumn at the Dukes

The new season at the Dukes in Lancaster attempts to showcase local talent alongside a wide range of drama, dance and music brought to Lancashire from around the world.

The autumn programme begins in October with a co-production with Action Transport Theatre of The Bomb by Kevin Dyer, based on the real-life meeting between Patrick Magee, who planted the 1984 Brighton bomb for the IRA, and Jo Berry, whose father was killed by the blast. Berry and Magee will be at the Dukes on 14 October to talk about their experiences.

The Christmas production in the newly refurbished and renamed performance space The Rake is Charles Way's adaptation of classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty, directed by Kevin Dyer.

Northern Broadsides will visit with its production of Dario Fo's Accidental Death of an Anarchist relocated to present-day northern England, and Farnham Maltings will be the first visiting company to perform in the new space The Round with a slice of Canadian farm life in The Drawer Boy by Michael Healey. North west companies Angel Club North and Momentum will bring their productions Obstacles to Coming Home and Anima.

In Potted Potter Dan and Jeff tell the stories of all seven Harry Potter books in seventy minutes, and Toby Hadoke talks through his Doctor Who obsession in Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf.

In music, local artists Lava, Heroes of She, How's My Pop, One Chip Potato and The Madrigals are programmed alongside legendary jazz musician Courtney Pine, and Sujata Banerjee Dance Company will perform new production A Sacred Thread on the main stage.

For young audiences, Fuse and Loci will perform Shadow Companion by Avaes Mohammad with music by Arun Ghosh and Box Clever will perform Sixteen Up, and for even younger audiences, Handheld Theatre brings its story of friendship, music and chocolate Praline Moment.

Recently-appointed director of the Dukes, Joe Sumsion, said, "This truly is the season of passion. If you are interested in love, life, death and relationships, family intrigue, beauty, betrayal and obsession; if you want to laugh, cry, think more deeply, and be deeply moved, there is much for you to enjoy at the Dukes this season. We feel passionately about this venue and know that local people care deeply about its future and we think this season’s programme will reflect our shared vision for a bright and fulsome future here at the Dukes."
