The Dumfries Theatre Royal

Dumfries Theatre Future in the Balance

The Dumfries Theatre Royal could be forced to close if it does not get funding of £2.5m from Dumfries and Galloway Council next month.

The eighteenth century theatre needs that amount in partnership funding to release a National Lottery grant of £1.7m and approach the European Regional Development Fund to raise, in total, £5.3m for a virtual rebuilt of the crumbling theatre and to comply with the Disability Discrimation Act. The theatre, it is said, virtually has to be rebuilt but council officers are recommending rejection of the application, which will be discussed at the council's corporate policy committee meeting next month. The council will then make a final decision on 29th June.

The Theatre is owned by the Guild of Players who bought it in 1959, thereby saving it from demolition, who run iton a voluntary basis. The Theatre is funded entirely by Guild membership subscriptions, and by Box Office receipts. It does not currently receive any grant-aid towards running costs. However today the council's education and community services committee awarded it a £105,000 grant to further its development plans.

"The money will allow us to take the project to the next stage, with detailed architectural designs," said Carol Godridge, secretary of the Theatre Royal Trust.

Built in 1792, it is the oldest working theatre in Scotland.
