Third Eclipse Production

Eclipse Theatre has announced that its third production will be the world premiere of Little Sweet Thing by Roy Williams. It will open at the New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich in February.

Over the past two years Eclipse Theatre has received national acclaim for its productions of Moon on a Rainbow Shawl and Oladipo Agboulojes' adaptation of Mother Courage and Her Children. The company has received a number of theatre award nominations which show how successful the Theatre Eclipse Initiative has been in raising the profile of black work.

Williams will be delivering a "raw, gripping piece of drama that will appeal directly to younger audiences as well as core theatregoers". Michael Buffong will direct Little Sweet Thing and newly-appointed assistant director Steve Marmion will lead an education programme for the national tour.

Eclipse Theatre also undertakes a huge amount of work developing, supporting and nurturing black writers. The Eclipse Theatre Writers' Lab, in association with Nottingham Playhouse, Birmingham Rep, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Ipswich's New Wolsey Theatre and Manchester Contact, has decided to award a writers' commission to five of the ten black playwrights initially selected for the scheme.

Each of the writers will be placed at one of the theatres involved to continue their dramaturgical programme, with the aim of producing their work for the main house spaces.
