Edinburgh: the Festivals and the Residents A survey in the Edinburgh Evening News has dispelled many myths about the attitude of Edinburgh residents towards the festivals and, in particular, the world's biggest arts festival, the Edinburgh Fringe. Asked if they had attended any of the August festivals, only 16.4% said they had not, where as 65.6% said they had attended at least one Fringe show and 27.6% has attended an International Festival event. 33.2% had attended two or three Fringe shows and 31.8% the same number of EIF shows. Comedy was the most popular, with 46.6% saying it was their favourite, whilst 38.7% plumped for theatre. The third most popular was exhibitions (25.1%) with rock/pop in fourth place at 18.0%. 48.0% are more likely to attend a festival event than they were ten years ago, with 20.0% saying they are less likely to. 27.0% haven't changed. Signifiantly 89.6% are proud that Edinburgh has the reputation of hosting the greatest celebration of the arts in the world. 89.9% rated the range of choice of shows at the Fringe either excellent or fair and 70.4% thought the Fringe offered excellent (19.1%) or fair (60.3%) value for money. 53.5% do not believe that the Fringe has become too large and 48.3% are against quality control over acts and performers. On the vexed question of whether the Fringe should receive more public funding, 44.6% said yes, 17.8% were unsure and 36.9% said no. If more public funding were to be provided, 72.1% said it should come from the Scottish Executive, 60.5% from the Scottish Arts Council and 50.5% Edinburgh City Council. 75.8% actually look forward to the Festivals and 81.7% would miss them if they were scrapped tomorrow. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
