Edinburgh's Festivals Facing Cuts Edinburgh City Council has warned the city's major festivals to expect cuts of up to 4% in 2010, according to The Scotsman. Jim Inch, corporate services director at the council, told the newspaper that meetings are being held this month with all arts organisations, including festivals, to ask them to identify 4% worth of cuts and begin talks to share resources. Currently the city gives the International Festival £2.47m and the Fringe £100,000. Both festivals also rely heavily on business sponsorship and it is said that, although existing sponsorship will continue until agreements run out, it is proving very difficult to attract new sponsorship due to the recession. In a separate development, the Fringe announced that it has again frozen its fees for participation. Fringe Society chief executive Kath Mainland told The Stage today, "The freeze is in recognition that the tough economic situation we have been in for a while is continuing. We need to make sure that performers and companies are still able to bring work here."
