Edinburgh Fringe 2003 Annual Report

The Fringe Society annual report for 2003, just published, shows the event was the most successful ever:

  • Over 1,000,000 tickets sold
  • A record number of venues (207)
  • Over 70 new venues
  • 21,594 performances of 1,541 shows by 668 companies
  • 12,940 performers
  • Third of all shows world premieres, 7% UK premieres, 4% European premieres
  • 10% of shows were free
  • 43% of shows cost £5 or under
  • 33% of all tickets sold online
  • 29,323 tickets sold in the 2 for 1 offer made on the first two days (28% increase on 2002)
  • The top selling theatre show was 12 Angry Men

The Report contains the Income and Expenditure Account for 2002:

  • Total Income was £1,212,927
  • Direct expenditure : £973,311
  • Indirect expenditure : £235,313
  • Total expenditure : £1,208,624
  • Surplus : £4,303

In 1978, ticket sales were under 300,000. They reached 500,000 by 1985, then slumped a little, getting back to 500,000 by 1989 and finally exceeded that figure in 1991. They reached 600,000 in 1993 and 700,000 in 1996 and 800,000 in 1999, slumped for one year, then climbed by 100,000 each year from 2001.
