EdFringe 2003 Preview (1)

Peter Brook at the Traverse
According to a report in The Stage, Peter Brook will make his first ever appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe this year when he brings his English language production of Themba's The Suit to the Traverse. This is the first time that Themba's play, about adultery in a South African township, has been performed in Europe in any lnagiuge other than French.

The production is a collaboration between Brook and the Chiocago Shakespeare Theater and will premiere in Chicago before arriving in Edinburgh.

The Gilded Balloon is Back
Karen Koren's Gilded Balloon, which was completely destroyed in the massive fire which hit Edinburgh last year, will still have a presence in the Cowgate area, she has announced. The caves in Niddry Street South will have three performance spaces and the Cabaret Voltaire in Blair Street one. The Giklded Balloon Honeycomb will also be running.

The headquarters of the GB operation will be the University Student Union building in Teviot Row, just a few moments' walk from the Pleasance Dome in Potterrow, which Koren has used for the last two years. Also used for GB productions will be the Venue, a nightclub on Calton Road.

Fire Site to be Venue?
The site of the fire, between Cowgate and Chambers Street, may not be an empty space this year. According to the Edinburgh Evening News, the nine owners of the site are determined that visitors will not be confronted by "huge hole in the ground" and insider gossip suggests that the Famous Spiegeltent may reappear there. It was last seen a few years ago on the roof of the Waverley Shopping Centre.

Rocket Takes over from the Pleasance
But just in one venue! Rocket Venues, which runs Venue 123 in Infirmary Street, is to take over the running of the Roxburgh Place Halls, formerly Pleasance Over the Road.

C is Fine!
Adam House in Chambers Street, the main home of C Venues, which suffered water damage as a result of the fire, will, we are told, be totally dried out in time for this year's Fringe, so C, which bids fair very soon to join the "Big 3" of Assembly, Gilded Balloon and Pleasance as the biggest Fringe venues, is safe and will be able to run as normal.
