EdFringe 2003 Preview (5)

The Pod Comes to Edinburgh
Manchester-based production company, Cyclops Events, have unveiled their plans to erect a new temporary venue at this year's Fringe . The Pod, the Fringe's only purpose-built performance space, will arrive in Edinburgh on the back of two articulated lorries on 21st July, take a team of ten men ten hours to build, and will undoubtedly be this year's most talked-about Fringe venue.

The Pod began life in Manchester as the Royal Exchange Theatre's touring theatre and has spent the last four years in storage after it provided a much-needed home for the company following the IRA bombing of Manchester in 1996. Now, after some TLC and a few basic repairs, the seven-sided tubular aluminium structure is to be dusted off and transported to Edinburgh's Festival Square. Once there it will be used to stage over two hundred and fifty hours of live performance under its flame-retardant, PVC-coated, nylon roof.

Trestle Bring Chagall Alive
Trestle Theatre (in association with the Palace, Watford) will be pesenting the story of artist Marc Chagall at the George Square Theatre from 14th to 24th August. In this World Premiere, masked actors play the many weird and wonderful characters that peopled Chagall's life in Vitebsk and Paris, whilst puppeteers bring to life some of his most famous pictures such as the romantic scenes of Chagall and his wife Bella flying through the air.

All the Great Books!
Their press release says it all! ---

The Reduced Shakespeare Company present their hilarious, brand new show, direct from the USA -ALL THE GREAT BOOKS (abridged) Charge through Chaucer! Dash through Dickens! From Jane Austen to Jeffrey Archer the RSC will rifle through your bookshelves and ask questions such as: Why was Oliver so much better at the Twist than the Jive? Why does Homer wear such big pants? How much does a Greek urn? And who was afraid of Virginia Woolf? Chuck out your chalkboards, start making notes and let the RSC, in one hysterical show save you a lifetime of reading!

C - the Largest Theatre Venue
C has, it claims, the largest programme of theatre of all the venues on the Fringe, with seventy theatre shows and ten theatre shows for children. Closest competitors in the theatre genre are Rocket Venues, Underbelly and Assembly. All in all, C will be presenting 120 shows and events, making it the second largest venue after the Pleasance. With ten theatres, C venues is almost the same size as the Melbourne and Adelaide Fringe’s own venues.

Goldsmith Returns
Bright Colours Only, Pauline Goldmsith's smash hit of last year's Fringe, where it played at the Assemby, returns to Edinburgh at the Pleasance.

McAvera World Premiere
James Ellis (former Z Cars actor) and comedian Ed Byrne star in the world premiere of Brian McAvera's new play, Kings of the Road, about three generations of Belfast busmen, starting in the early thirties and finishing in 1969 - just at the start of the troubles. McAvera's last Fringe production was the very successful Picasso's Women. Kings of the Road plays at the Pleasance Dome for all three weeks.

Playing for Reward
From buses to the tube! Playing for Reward is another world premiere, a comedy drama about buskers on the London tube. It is described as...

...an edgy and authentic look at life through the eyes of a busker. Two actors create the fast and frenetic world of the Underground, the people who journey through it and its own, very distinctive sound. A new score will be performed live by musician and real-life Underground busker, Joe Evans.
