Bedlam Theatre - the exterior

Bedlam Gets Fringe Sponsorship - on eBay

Bedlam Theatre, the Edinbugh University Theatre Company's home and a regular Fringe venue for many years, has secured new sponsorship for the 2005 Fringe, but putting itself up for auction on eBay. The auction attracted huge interest with over a thousand people specifically searching for it on eBay. More than 21 bids were placed before the winning bidder - radio station Beat 106, with a bid of £1,850 - emerged.

Press and Marketing Officer Andrew Neilson took a great gamble by listing the sponsorship of the venue on eBay, with no reserve and a starting price of just 99p.

"I think its testimony to Bedlam’s fearless reputation at taking a risk with new writing that we were willing to do so with the auction. This is yet another of our risks that has paid off.

"I’m excited about working with Beat 106 during this year’s Fringe."

The money raised from sponsorship is going to be put towards improving the venue and supporting productions throughout the year.

The auction offered bidders the chance to support Britain’s only entirely student run theatre. It was the first time such an auction had appeared on eBay making it a Fringe first.

Beck’s who have had a close relationship with Bedlam during the Fringe for many years have also offered to lend their support. Beck’s will become this year’s venue board sponsor.

Bedlam Theatre is a permanent 90-seat black box theatre space, housed in an imposing deconsecrated neo-gothic church, with its major frontage looking along the length of George IV Bridge. The building has a rich past and is said to be located near the site of Edinburgh’s lunatic asylum, giving the theatre its distinctive name. Inside the Bedlam, there is a fully licensed bar and café, open all day serving everything from full meals to quick snacks.
