Dateline: 26th July, 2005 Purple Venues "Would Cost Too Much" More details have emerged about the closure of Purple Venues at this year's Edinburgh Fringe (see our story of 19th July). The Rutland Hotel in which L'Attaché nightclub, which was to be used by Purple Venues, is based, was bought from the original owners by Saltire Taverns in May. The company claim that they were not aware of the contract with Purple at that time and that it would cost tens of thousands of pounds to bring the venue, which has been unused and empty since December, up to standard in time for August. Mark Chivers, Saltire Taverns' operation director, told The Scotsman newspaper that he hoped to allow Purple Venues to use the space next year, following a multi-million pound refurbishment. Efforts are still being made to find alternative venues for the companies which have been made homeless by the decision. "Other venues really rally round and help when this happens," Paul Gidgin, the director of the Fringe, said, and he added, "It's always irritating when venue owners are initially keen to jump on the back of the success of the Fringe, but then do not fulfil their end of the deal when the time comes." Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
