Smith and Fassbender at the Assembly Mel Smith and Michael Fassbender are to play Winston Churchill and Michael Collins respectively in Allegiance in the Assembly Rooms' Music Hall during this year's Edinburgh Fringe. Mary Kenny's play, directed by Brian Gilbert, is based on historical research and captures the unlikely friendship between arch-imperialist statesman Winston Churchill and Irish rebel Michael Collins. Meeting in 1921 when Collins was sent to London for secret negotiations with the British government, the two instinctively disliked each other until one night Churchill invited the Sinn Fein leader to his home for a drink and they began drinking a great deal of whisky, brandy and champagne. By the end of the night, according to Lord Birkenhead, they had become bosom pals and were fascinated with one another. The 29 year old Fassbender was born in Germany and brought up in Killarney, Ireland. His mother is actually a great-niece of Michael Collins. Allegiance runs from 7th August - 13th August 2006 at 11am -12.30pm at the Assembly Rooms. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
