Dateline: 15th June, 2006 Perrier No More The Edinburgh Fringe's most prestigious award for comey, the Perrier, is to change its name this year as a result of a change in sponsorship. The awards will be known in future as the if.comeddies, after the new sponsoring company Scottish-based internet mortgage company Intelligent Finance. The director of the awards, theatre producer Nica Burns, said, "After 25 years Perrier have handed over their comedy baton. "We have taken a great deal of time and care in choosing our new sponsor. It was extremely important to us to find a company that was the right match to take these fantastic comedy awards into the future. Intelligent Finance is an exciting young company, a popular and important Scottish employer and, like the Comedy Awards, is rooted in Scotland but has a national profile." In recent year the fact that Perrier is part of the Nestlé Foods empire has been a source of controversy because of the parent company's manufacture of baby milk substitutes in developing countries. According to Baby Milk Action, Nestlés marketing of breast milk substitutes discourages breast-feeding and contributes to infant malnutrition and death. UNICEF and the WHO estimate that one and a half million babies die each year because they are not breastfed. In 2001 an alternative awards scheme - the Tap Water Awards - was set up to oppose what MSP Mark Ballard of the Scottish Gren Party described as "expensive, over-hyped, corporate career-mongering."
