One of the Big Tops

Not in Our Meadows!

Local community groups have launched a bid to prevent two popular Edinburgh Fringe shows - The Ladyboys of Bangkok and the Moscow State Circus - from using The Meadows this year.

The two shows are presented in two "state of the art" big tops next to Melville Drive and have done so since 1993. Now Tollcross and Southside Community Councils are objecting to their presence on the grounds that there are too many caravans on the site, that cast and crew use the parkland as a toilet, that the area is a sea of mud when the shows leave, and that there is a large amount of fly-posting in the surrounding streets. The two community councils have submitted written objections to promoter Gandey World Class Productions' application for a licence to Edinburgh City Council.

The objections are not to the shows themselves, said Southside Community Council, but to the associated problems. "We do not think that the Meadows is a proper place for people to reside in temporary caravans, which add considerably to the problems with the grass and paths," its letter to the city council says.

Phillip Gandey told The Scotsman that if they could not go ahead, it would be a financial disaster. "We have booked all the accommodation and paid for the site.

"The only caravans we have on there are for security, admin staff and technicians to maintain the structures. All the artistes and Lady Boys are off-site staying in rented accommodation and we have decreased the size of the area we use."

13th July Update

The Edinburgh City Council has granted the licence, provided the shows do not crowd the site with caravans, cause excessive noise or flypost their performances.
