Scottish Dance Theatre at the Fringe

Scottish Dance Theatre (Herald Angel Award Winner 2005) returns to the Edinburgh Fringe thjis year with a powerful and challenging work by 2007 Peter Darrell Choreographic Award Winner, Vanessa Haska.

This is only the third outing for Vanessa’s work - the Cyprus-born, London-based choreographer created Sorry for the Missiles! in January this year after being named as joint winner of the Peter Darrell Award.

Featuring the whole company and set to a lively mix of Eastern European folk music, the work is a gripping piece of theatrical dance that excites, entertains and is ultimately moving.

Sorry for the Missiles! is about emotional states of war when the lives of ordinary people become caught up in conflict. Although Vanessa’s creative process was triggered by the fighting in and over Gaza, as a Greek Cypriot she has drawn on experiences much closer to home.

‘In war you can be involved without thinking or knowing it. I’m familiar with real stories about that. It’s something I feel close to in my emotions and something I want to explore in my choreography,’ she says.

Scottish Dance Theatre is one of the UK’s leading contemporary dance companies, winning the prestigious Critic’s Circle National Dance Award for Outstanding Company Repertoire (Modern) in 2003. This year marks the 21st birthday of the company (originally known as Dundee Rep Dance Company), as well as the 10th anniversary of Artistic Director Janet Smith taking the helm. SDT works with a diverse range of choreographers and regularly tours throughout the UK and internationally.

Sorry for the Missiles! runs from 21st to 26th August at 5pm (33 mins), at the Zoo Southside (venue 82, 117 Nicolson St).
