Dateline: 18th July, 2008
Wales in Edinburgh A look at three very different Welsh companies heading to Edinburgh next month. True/Fiction Theatre have been gaining momentum in South Wales since 2003, when they were first founded by Cardiff-born designer, Anna Bliss-Scully, and Swansea born actor/director, Matthew Bulgo. Their latest show, The Exquisite Corpse was commissioned by the Wales Millennium Centre in 2007 as part of the Incubator scheme for new writing. And its an intriguing concept: what happens when you play the parlour game, The Exquisite Corpse (Consequences) in a theatre, with actors, lighting, sound, projection, story, props, costumes, and scenes? The audience decide in advance the order in which fifteen random scenes are performed, promising a unique experience every time. Written by five familiar names in Welsh writing for theatre, (Branwen Davies, Angharad Devonald, Tracy Harris, Kit Lambert and Othniel Smith), and with a score specially commissioned by Blair Mowat, The Exquisite Corpse runs at C Venues, Chambers Street from July 30 until August 25. The Exquisite Corpse previews at the Weston Studio, WMC, July 24-26 The Sherman Cymru, re-launched in January this year and pride themselves on their promotion of the best of new Welsh writing. They are premiering Philip Ralph's much anticipated verbatim piece, Deep Cut at the Traverse from 31 July until 24 August. After two years of research and face-to-face interviews, Ralph constructs a bold and compelling look at the infamous Deepcut Army Barracks where Private Cheryl James and three other soldiers died from gunshot wounds between 1995 and 2002. Directed by Mick Gordon, artistic director of On Theatre, and former Associate Director, National Theatre. Deep Cut previews at the Sherman Cymru, July 24-26 before heading to the Traverse. See Facebook for an e-trailer If it's comedy you're after, South By South Wales promises Wales's finest up-and-coming comic talents, direct from the valleys, including the rambling and whimsical Elis James, "storytelling man mountain" Matt Price ('has extraordinary tales to tell' The Scotsman) and two of the best new comedians from the principality, Josh and Henry Widdicombe. South by South Wales perform at Teviot the Turret, the Gilded Balloon, 30 July - 25 August every day at 5.15. Allison Vale
