McEwan Hall

Underbelly Breaks Ranks

Edinburgh Fringe venue the Underbelly has decided to put tickets for some of its shows on sale three months in advance of the normal time.

Tickets for stand-up comics Danny Bhoy, John Bishop and Jim Jefferies at the McEwan Hall went on sale on Friday. Venues normally start to sell tickets when the Fringe Programme launches at the beginning of June.

Describing the traditional wait until June as "old-fashioned", Underbelly director Charlie Wood said, "All the other summer festivals, even the Edinburgh International Festival, go on sale months before the festival starts. If the Festival is going to continue to grow, it has to do what all the other festivals are doing."

The McEwan Hall in Bristo Square, which seats over 1,000 people, will be one of the Fringe's biggest venues. It has had occasional use as a venue in previous years but this will be the first time it has hosted large shows throughout the Fringe.

In recent years the Bristo Square area has seen enormous growth in the number of Fringe venues with the Gilded Balloon Teviot (9 performance spaces), the Pleasance Dome (6 spaces), the George Square Theatre (in 2010 to be run by C Venues), George Square Gardens, the Reid Concert Hall and the E4 Udderbelly Pasture with its upside-down purple cow tent. It is now the area of Edinburgh which has the largest number of venues within very close proximity.
