Fringe 2002 Facts

Facts, both startling and silly, about the forthcoming 2002 Edinburgh Fringe:

Startling!

  • There will be 20.342 performances of 1491 shows by 619 companies in 183 venues
  • There will be a total of 11,713 performers taking part in the 2002 Fringe
  • There will be 508 theatre shows (36% of the total)
  • 23% of shows are comedy, 20% music, 5% each musicals, dance and physical theatre. Children's shows and exhibitions account for 4% each, and other events 3%.
  • 25% are world, 10% UK and 5% European premieres
  • 10% of all Fringe shows are free, while 44% (660) cost £5 or less
  • 67% of all audiences at all Edinburgh's festivals throughout the year are for the Fringe
  • The online ticketing facility at www.edfringe.com fulfills more than 20% of all Fringe ticket sales
  • The largest venue is the Royal Highland Centre at Ingliston (capacity 5000) and the smallest a lift (capacity 1)

Silly!

  • The longest show title is 35 words long: The Complete Lost Works of Samuel Beckett As Found In An Envelope (Partially Burned) In A Dustbin In Paris Labelled 'Never To be Performed. Never. Ever. EVER! Or I'll Sue! I'll Sue from The Grave!!!'
  • To see every performance one after the other would take three years and 355 days
  • The programme is 216 pages long, the biggest ever
