New Edfringe CEO The Edinburgh Fringe has created a new post of chief executive and appointed the current administrative director of the Edinburgh Book Festival, Kath Mainland, to the post. She starts work in late May. Mainland, one of over 100 applicants, has been involved in festivals in Scotland for seventeen years, beginning her career as an administrative assistant at the Fringe and working for Unique Events which produces Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations. She has also worked for the Assembly, one of the major Fringe producers, and was a freelance festivals and events producer for eight years. Her boss at the Assembly, William Burdett-Coutts, said of her, "She is one of the best arts administrators in the country. She has huge knowledge of the Fringe and knows Edinburgh inside out." She is seen as a "safe pair of hands" and a city council source told The Scotsman, "Kath Mainland is extremely well known in arts circles in the city and we imagine that'll be a huge advantage as she gets to grips with the job. It's crucial the Fringe gets back on an even keel as soon as possible and we look forward to working closely with her in the next few months." Tim Hawkins will remain as general manager with oversight of the day-to-day running of the Fringe and the introduction of a new ticketing system. Last year's failure of a new ticketing system led to considerable financial loss to the Fringe and damage to its reputation. Mainland is credited with rebuilding confidence in the book festival's ticketing systems last year, after failures in 2007.
