Cleansing
Cleansing is a desperate love story set in a political prison, in a fascist and corrupt Britain, where those with freedom are a constant threat. A hard-hitting piece of theatre, the play explores the effects on society's reformation, from brainwashed propaganda to resurgent hope, by asking the question - must we speak louder?

Presented by Artts Skillcentre at the Pleasance Cavern from 31st July to 7th Augus,t every day at 12:15.

The Sitcom Trials
The comedy show in which three sitcoms compete, the audience vote and only see the ending of the winner, is returning for a second run at the Edinburgh Fringe with an exciting new twist.

Each competing sitcom is a star vehicle, written by and starring top circuit comedians. LA improv comedienne Jovanka Steele will be going head to head with character actor James Holmes and a double act of magician Mandy Muden and Comedy Store regular Justin Moorhouse.

Who will be the favourite? Only the audience can decide.

The Gilded Balloon: 4pm daily.

Big Bad Duvet Terror
In Big Bad Duvet Terror, three children awake to find themselves all alone. Faced with their worst nightmares, they set out on an imaginary journey, which takes them from a small bedroom to the whole world and beyond. Will Winkle be turned into jam at the local corner shop? Will Doodah be suffocated by the old ladies' difficult questions? Will Bun escape the army of fingers that has trapped him in the toilet? This darkly comic, scary and very silly show is suitable for families with children aged 8 and over.

Big Bad Duvet Terror is performed by Quiconque: Catherine Alexander, Seán Buckley and Petra Wahlqvist, who all trained at Ecole Jacques Lecoq. The company recently completed a three week tour of Ireland, a run at Camden People's Theatre Sprint Festival and a matinee performance at The Bull in Barnet.

C too: Thursday 1st August to Sunday 25th August at 4.00pm.

Mike Maran Productions
Three shows this year:

  • The stage adaptation of Captain Corelli's Mandolin which has broken box office records in theatres all over the UK and is returning to the tiny venue where it was first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1999
  • The award-winning Did You Used to be R.D.Laing? which sold out all performances in Edinburgh in 2000 & 2001
  • The stage adaptation of Private Angelo by Eric Linklater - once a film by Peter
    Ustinov

Mike will be performing in all three shows in the tiny theatre which is upstairs at Valvona & Crolla.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of his first fringe production Penny Whistles (about the life and work of Robert Louis Stevenson) which he presented in 1977. David Rose came to see it. He was then the head of Drama at the BBC, and he subsequently produced and directed it for television.

Roadmovie
A play by Nick Whitfield and Wes Williams at Pleasance Over the Road Two .

Nick Whitfield (Best Actor nominee, The Stage) stars in this funny, fantastical tale of the extremes of humanity .. as found in an independent video shop.

Alex (favourite film - Spinal Tap) works at the video shop with Jermaine (Face Off), Christine (Three Colours White) and the furious Elvis ('Don't ask stupid questions.'). This isn't Blockbusters, however, this is the Independent Sector, where the customer is rarely right.

The traffic through here is relentless, dizzying - just like the A5 outside the door. There's Jim (no criminal record, impeccable rental history, probably insane), the sharp-suited Cockney permanently flanked by 12 Chinamen ("…fucker's got his own mobile jury…") and The Woman With No Name who watches her films in the afternoon and always needs help choosing. Using a blend of solo performance and film, Roadmovie explores the histories, the dreams and the fears of people who live and work along the Kilburn High Road.

1st to 26th August at 2.00pm

Caryl Churchill: This Is a Chair
This is a Chair: a cryptic study of urban isolation and social tension. Caryl Churchill: award-winning and celebrated contemporary British playwright, author of Blue Heart, Cloud Nine and Top Girls. Androgynous Productions: the new and resourceful theatre company from Reading, dedicated to producing modern texts through physical and ensemble processes.

This play is unusual and dramatically riveting, constantly juxtaposing image and words, movement and sound. A cast of four bring fifteen 'ordinary' modern personas to life in this excitingly visual and challenging production.

C cubed: Thursday 15th August to Sunday 25th August at 2.00

NPLS Spectrum Youth Theatre Company: The 8th Sin
This new musical follows the fortunes of Joe and his two sons, Charlie & Max (and Max's shopaholic girlfriend Janine) as they rush to commit the seven deadly sins in exchange for their father's estate.

The two brothers have never really got on and when they begin their challenge rivalry sets in, not least in competing for the affections of their favourite coffee frother Louise, or the services of the best hairdressers and plastic surgeons in town.

But they soon decide to work together as a team. Joe, meanwhile, has his own cunning plan to make himself a bit of cash. For a start, there's that film he always wanted to make…

Who will get the money?
Is there any money?
Why does Janine wear such disgusting clothes?
And what is it about the way Louise froths the milk that drives them insane?

Augustine's: Tuesday 20th August - Friday 23rd August at 1.00pm
