Dateline: 14th July, 2002 Edinburgh Fringe 2002 - The Smirnoff Underbelly The Smirnoff Underbelly brings to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2002 as exciting and diverse a theatre programme as found anywhere on the Fringe. The venue's three principal spaces are cavernous vaults, unspoilt by black tabs, which are ideal for site specific work and provide an environment not found anywhere else at the Fringe. Most productions have been purposefully designed for the venue. From London, The Imaginary Body brings a raw piece of physical theatre in 100, fresh from workshop performances at the Young Vic, the Arcola and the Pleasance theatres in London. The Lecoq trained Tuning Fork devise a physical retelling of King Lear. BigRedPlant Productions stage an unpretentious but visually stunning reconstruction of the Bible. Cirque du Soleil performers from off-Broadway bring two shows which have been wowing American audiences this year: a circus show, Rocket and Roxie's Untimely, Tragic and Fiery Death Stunt Show and a trapeze and juggling show, Planet Banana: Swinger's Circus. Failbetter Produtions revive the chilling and highly successful Crave, following its award winning debut at the Fringe a few years ago, and High Players present an adventurous promenade production of Fiddler on the Roof. Double Edge Drama return with their five star success of 2000, Kassandra. Eastcheap Rep. Company from America bring Jumpers, a dark, new comedy focusing on the aftermath of 9/11 in New York. The Suzy Lamplugh mystery is explored in Blonde Shop's Dealing with Clair. Scottish company Nutshell present the world premier of the Scots translation of John Heywood's The Play O' the Wather under the direction of Kate Nelson and design of Lucinda Meredith (Arches, Glasgow). Smirnoff Underbelly's programme of theatre for children includes C.S Lewis' classic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Pied Piper of Hamlin which Blunderbus perform with life-size puppets. The Smirnoff Underbelly is beneath the Edinburgh Central Library with entrances on Cowgate and Victoria Street. The Underbelly returns to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with a major new sponsor, two new performance spaces and a new bar. The Smirnoff Underbelly triples its number of shows to 58 and the result is a magnificent mix of exciting new theatre, circuses and dance, and an eclectic comedy programme in conjunction with award winning London comedy club, Amused Moose Comedy. The Smirnoff Underbelly lurks in the former bank vaults under the Central Library on George IV Bridge. At the centre of the Fringe, the venue is a unique blend of haunting, site specific theatre spaces, intimate comedy venues and atmospheric bars.
