Fringe Awards in Week 1

The first awards of the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe have been announced.

First to be announcved were the Fringe Firsts. The awards, which recognise new writing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, are selected by the Scotsman newspaper. Theatre critic Joyce McMillan announced the winners, giving her own insight into each piece. She was joined by dancer and entertainer Lionel Blair who is performing two shows at this year's Fringe. Announced every Friday throughout the Fringe, the first set of winners featured theatre examining the plight of couples, change, and relationships.

The winners were:

  • Orphans - Traverse - Playwright Dennis Kelly
  • Internal - Traverse at Mercure Point Hotel - Belgium Theatre Company, Ontroerend Goed
  • Crush - Underbelly - Playwright Paul Charlton
  • The Unravelling - The Space @ Venue 45 Playwright Fin Kennedy, produced by Mulberry School for Girls
  • Found - Dance Base
  • The Event - Assembly - John Clancy
  • East 10th Street - Traverse, Written and performed by Edgar Oliver

On Saturday, the first recipients of Bank of Scotland Herald Angel Awards were unveiled with a host of Traverse-based talent taking the bulk of the acclaim.

The first angels to take flight were:

  • Barflies - Traverse - Grid Iron Theatre Company
  • Orphans - Traverse - Playwright Dennis Kelly
  • Internal - Traverse at Mercure Point Hotel - Belgium Theatre Company, Ontroerend Goed
  • Trilogy - St Stephens - Nic Green
  • 100 Wounded Tears - Zoo Southside - DOT 504

The first Archangel award went to Universal Arts for their programme at New Town Theatre, St George’s West and the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

Finally, The Herald gave out this week's Little Devil award to The Red Room - after the adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Mask of the Red Death went ahead at the Traverse in spite of losing two members of its small cast due to sudden personal tragedies.
