King's Thetare, Edinburgh

King's Gets £500,000 Grant

Historic Scotland has made a grant of £500,000 towards the refurbishment of Edinburgh's King's Theatre, which has already received £6m from the city council.

The theatre, which was built in 1905 and is Grade A listed, has been deteriorating for some years and the Historic Scotland grant will enable repairs to be carried out to the exterior, foyers and auditorium, which will enable it to meet modern safety standards.

The grant will enable the Festival City Theatres Trust to apply for matched funding from other bodies which will bring it closer to the £9-£12m it is thought a full refurbishment will cost.

What is described as "significant" amounts of asbestos have been found in the building, which have now been safely enclosed, and in the last two years masonry has fallen from the roof. There is also evidence of dry and damp rot in the building.

The theatre is a receiving house, hosting many major productions such as the Touring Partnership's For King and Country and Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in Waiting for Godot. It is also a venue for local amateur societies: the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, for example, are presenting HMS Pinafore and Patience there this weekend.
