Elisabeth Sladen (1946 - 2011) Actress Elisabeth Salden died of cancer on 19th April at the age of 65. She was best known for playing Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who from 1973 to 1976 alongside Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, a part she revisited in numerous specials and, most recently, in four seasons of the spin-off series The Sarah Jane Chronicles. She appeared in numerous TV shows, including Coronation Street, Z-Cars, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, Special Branch and Peak Practice, as well as presenting the children's programme Stepping Stones. She appeared in two films: in Ferry Across the Mersey (1965) she was an extra and in Silver Dream Racer (1980) she had a small part as a secretary. She began her career in theatre, as an ASM at Liverpool Playhouse where she also appeared in some small roles. In fact, hr first part was as a corpse! She went on to play Desdemona in Othello in Manchester, played in rep with Alan Ayckbourn in Scarborough and appeared at the Royal Court. Her last stage appearance was in panto at Windsor in 2008, playing Mrs Darling and the Mermaid in Peter Pan.
