Dateline: 22nd February, 2004 Piaf and Brecht in Leicester Singer and actress Elizabeth Mansfield is to perform an evening devoted to Edith Piaf and Bertolt Brecht on Sunday 7th March 2004 (7.30pm) at The Y Theatre, East Street, Leicester. Elizabeth Mansfield's gripping portraits of Edith Piaf and Bertolt Brecht bring them vividly to life, in a full, dramatic evening interwoven with their unforgettable songs. About as far apart as you can get, Piaf and Brecht, two great figures of European song and ballad, amazingly, connect by contrast. Piaf engages the heart; Brecht engages the mind. But his songs, like Piaf's, are full of fantastic theatricality and drama. And, unexpectedly, through the single voice of Elizabeth Mansfield, two powerfully different world views emerge. The songs will be sung in English, with many in new translations by award winning writer Steve Trafford. Tickets for Portraits in Song, presented by the Peepul Centre as part of International Womens Day, are priced at £7 and £5 and are available from The Y Theatre Box office 0116 255 7066. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
