Emerge in Leeds on Monday

The second Emerge Festival opens in Leeds on Monday 21st June and runs until Sunday.

Returning after a successful pilot in 2009, the project was started with the belief that some of the best new theatre in Britain is coming out of Yorkshire. The event aims to provide a major cross-city platform for young and emerging theatre-makers to try out ideas and connect with new audiences. Throughout the week there will be performances, workshops, networking events and showings of work in different stages of development.

The week starts with a new production from Red Grit, the actor training project of one of Leeds’ most respected and established theatre companies, Red Ladder. Bittersweet Sunshine (21 – 22 June, The Carriageworks) is Yorkshire-based playwright Ben Tagoe’s first commission for the company, having graduated from the University of Leeds with a BBC Alfred Bradley Award.

Other highlights include a showing of Naomi Rothwell’s The Dreams of Philomina (Tues 22 June, stage@leeds), in a performance offered mentoring support by the Emerge team, and a Script Night curated by Script Yorkshire (Wed 23 June, Seven Arts). There will also be workshops from internationally renowned artists such as Lone Twin (Mon 21 June, The Carriageworks) and Unlimited Theatre (Sun 27 June, The Carriageworks).

One of the success stories of last year’s Emerge Festival will be making a return to take part in this year’s activities. Theatre-maker Pete Reed was awarded a £400 Light Night commission at last year’s Pitch & Win (an event that will be repeated at stage@leeds on Fri 25 June), as well as performing a work-in-progress version of his show, Wrecked.

Since then he has found success as part of the organising team of The Accidental Festival at London’s BAC, and his company, Crushed Arts, will be performing at The Carriageworks as part of their autumn season. During Emerge they will present a new piece as part of the Scratch Night at Seven Arts (Thurs 24 June).

Emerge is a partnership between three of Leeds’ venues – The Carriageworks Theatre, stage@leeds and Seven. They are being supported by organisations and agencies from the city, including the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Script Yorkshire and Leeds Light Night. The Festival is funded by Arts Council England.
