Connie Fisher
Emma Williams

Fisher Plays Eight As Williams Pulls Out

The winner of the How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? reality TV show will now play all eight performances a week as the alternate Maria in the Wst End production of The Sound of Music, established West End actress/singer Emma Williams, has pulled out of the show after it was announced she would only play two shows a week (see our story of earlier this week).

A statement from Williams and Andrew Lloyd Webber says, "Following the casting of trained actress Connie Fisher and discussions with the producers, Emma Williams, who it was anticipated would play the alternate Maria, has withdrawn her services from the production.

"Connie will now play all eight performances a week, unless indisposed in which case she would be covered in the usual manner by the understudy.

"Emma, who first rose to prominence in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, looks forward to working with Andrew Lloyd Webber, David Ian, The Really Useful Group, Live Nation and Jeremy Sams in the future and wishes Connie every success with the role."

It is said that Williams was angered by the "downsizing" of her patricipation in the show and at being referred to (by Lloyd Webber in an interview with the Daily Mail) as an understudy. She was eighteen when she appeared as Truely Scrumptious in Chitty opposite Michael Ball and has since gone on to play in Bat Boy (West Yorkshire Playhouse and West End), Sex, Chips and Rock 'n' Roll (Royal Exchange, Manchester), Promises, Promises (Sheffield Crucible) and Tomorrow Morning (New End).
