Tricycle and 503 Win Empty Space Awards Kilburn's Tricycle Theatre and Battersea's Theatre 503 (formerly the Latchmere) are the winners of this year's Empty Space/Peter Brook Awards. The award (and £2000) for an established studio venue went to the Tricycle, whilst Theatre 503 won the Up-and-Coming Theatre award (and £1500). Other nominations for the etsablished awards were BAC and Southwark Playhouse, and for the Up-and-Coming award the Liverpool Everyman and the Royal Exchange Studio, Manchester. They each receive £350. The Mark Marvin Rent Subsidy Award (£1500), which is given to enable a production to fund ther rent for a theatre, went to Shapeshifters for their production of Lark Rise to Candleford. The Empty Space/Peter Brook Awards are made in honour, not opf individual productions, but of a body of work which is exciting and innovatove from small studio venues which receive little or no public funding. They are named in honour of Peter Brook and take their name from his book The Empty Space.
