The Empty Space 2008 The winners of the 19th Empty Space..Peter Brook Award have been announced. The various awards are given by London TheatReviews, the V&A Theatre Collections and the National Theatre Studio. The award for an established studio theatre, a cheque for £2000, went to The Royal Court for its discoveries of new plays, writers, and spaces in quality productions. The award of £1500 for an up-and-coming studio theatre went to the Union Theatre, for its unique pocket-sized revivals of musicals and horror stories seasons within a pocket-sized purse. All nominees - Everyman Liverpool, Arcola, Gate, Theatre 503 - receive £350 for distinctive work. Special Mentions for Theatre Without Walls given to the National Theatre's Watch this Space, Paines Plough, the National Theatre of Scotland, Artichoke, and Forest Fringe. The selection panel for both awards was Lyn Gardner (Guardian), Dominic Cavendish (Telegraph), Mark Shenton (Sunday Express & Blog), Fiona Mountford (Evening Standard), Sam Marlowe (The Times). Consultants are: Michael Billington (Guardian), Susannah Clapp (Observer), Jeremy Kingston (The Times), Paul Taylor (The Independent), and Blanche Marvin (London TheatReviews and founder of the award). The Mark Marvin Rent Subsidy Award of £1500 went to The Angle Company and Hackney Empire Studio, whilst the Peter Brook/Equity Ensemble Award of £2000 was given to BAC. The Dan Crawford Pub Award of £2000 went to the Finborough Theatre for its years of brilliant output of new plays or revivals. Its survival through the years has been a mark of distinction. The awards originated from the need to raise the profile of the fringe theatre. It is, says Blanche Marvi, the founder of the award, "from the fringe that a creative and experimental energy evolves, acting as a training ground for all categories of theatre talent ... writers, actors, directors, designers, publicists, production and administration trainees. It is a place open to new talent; it gives expression to our culture. Culture is the measure of civilisation which is measured by its art. The EMPTY SPACE...PETER BROOK AWARD is given annually in recognition of innovation and excellence for the body of work. Inspired by the achievements of Peter Brook within his concepts of space and given to theatres that follow the spirit of his work, the award is limited to smaller theatres, 200 seats or less, who receive little or no public funding. We are the only award that supports the studio venues and not the individual who might reach for the established theatre, abandoning the fringe. We support those who struggle in keeping theatre an art form."
