2011 Empty Space Awards Winners

The winners of The Empty Space…Peter Brook Awards (the 22nd) have been announced.

The winner of The Empty Space…Peter Brook Award is Southwark Playhouse for its energy in working on new plays, in new spaces on a shoestring with quality productions.

The winner recives a cheque for £2,000.

The selection panel for the awards are: Lyn Gardner (Guardian), Dominic Cavendish (Telegraph), Mark Shenton (Sunday Express & The Stage Blog), Fiona Mountford (Evening Standard) and Blanche Marvin (London TheatReviews and founder of the awards). The consultants are: Michael Billington (Guardian), Susannah Clapp (Observer), Jeremy Kingston (The Times) and Paul Taylor (The Independent).

Also announced are the winners of the Dan Crawford Innovation Award (worth £2,000) and a new award, the Peter Brook/Mobius Special Achievement Award, with a £1,000 prize.

The winner of the Dan Crawford Innovation Award was National Theatre Wales for its constant striving to gain recognition for their new plays, designers and directors in local areas and the Peter Brook/Mobius Special Achievement Award went to Nicolas Kent of the Tricycle Theatre .

In order for gifted companies to present their work in London and for the Fringe/Studio Theatres to afford to book them, the annual Mark Marvin Rent Subsidy Award of £1,500 is awarded each year in perpetuity with the hope that matching funds will be made available.

This year's winners were Bike Shed Theatre and the Old Red Lion.

The annual Peter Brook/Equity Ensemble Award of £2,000 to help establish deeper development of ensemble work within the studio theatres went to Faction Theatre Company.
