A performance of Brief Encounter at Birmingham REP was called off after 40 minutes because of a technical fault with the combined heat and power plant located beneath the theatre.

The auditorium was evacuated “as a precautionary measure” on Tuesday 13 February—but no other performance of Emma Rice’s adaptation of the Noël Coward play was affected.

However, the REP was without heating and hot water, so the restaurant and bar were closed for two days.

Audience members who had to leave on Tuesday are being contacted by the box office to arrange an exchange or a refund.
